The West Island Lakers Basketball Association (WILBA) recently announced that they will be inaugurating a Basketball Academy for boys and girls aged 6-8 this fall.
WILBA president Anthony Metrakos stated that the Academy is an important part step in athlete development. “The Academy is the latest WILBA initiative in our efforts to provide the West Island with the best possible basketball programs. The Academy is an important step in the development of our athletes.” The Academy, utilizing the concepts espoused in Canada Sport for Life (CS4L) and Basketball Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) will focus on the acquisition of fundamental movement skills. This stage, also referred to as the FUNdamental stage in an athlete’s developmental process, will focus on providing young players fun activities while learning fundamental movement skills necessary for basketball players.
The Academy’s curriculum will also include the Modified Games phase in which basketball is learned here through modified games such as 1-on-1, 2-on-2, etc.
The Academy, under the direction of WILBA’s new Technical Director, Mr. Mike Hickey, will have two one-hour sessions a week.
“The focus of the Academy is to teach the movements and basic skills that players will need as they develop physically and mentally,” Hickey said. “We want to create an atmosphere when young players want to come to the gym because they are having fun and are successful in skill acquisition.”
